$4 per entry will go to the Heart Foundation
The Heart Foundation is Australia's leading not-for-profit heart health organisation, working since 1959 to build community awareness about heart disease. Each year more than 46,000 Australians die from heart disease, stroke or blood vessel disease; that's a life lost almost every 10 minutes. The Heart Foundation works to improve the heart health of Australians and reduce disability and death from heart, stroke and blood vessel disease. The Heart Foundation does this through:
How We Make A Difference?
We run Australia's only heart health information service. Enquiries are answered by our professionally trained staff. Telephone 1300 36 27 87 for the cost of a local call.
The Heart Foundation develops best-care clinical guidelines for doctors to ensure hospital patients living in all areas receive world-class care.
We have helped achieve some of the most significant heart health medical advancements in the world. From the introduction of pacemakers, to pioneering healthier food choices through the Tick program, we are striving to provide the very best heart health information for Australians. For every $1 invested in cardiovascular research, there is an enormous $8 return on investment.
The Heart Foundation is the largest non-government source of funding for leading-edge heart research. We're funding more than 220 research awards in 2008 alone.
The Heart Foundation conducts many public campaigns to raise awareness of cardiovascular health in Australia. We also run Heart Foundation Jump Rope for Heart, Australia's best school-based skipping program, as well as many community-based walking programs.
“My name is Kathryn, but everyone calls me “Chook”; closest friends call me by my full name “Chooka”. I am 40 years old. I tell everyone my age because I’m happy to have lived this long. On 5th November, 2006 I competed in my third New York City Marathon. I am not a runner, nor am I an athlete, but I have a dream.”
Kathryn is totally dependent on a cardiac pacemaker that she has had since the age of 17. Her heart cannot generate any heart beats of its own and so she is reliant on the pacemaker for every single beat. Complications led to open heart surgery only 18 months after her first one was installed. At the time, doctors joked that she should not expect to be running marathons anytime soon after the surgery, but it did drastically improve her quality of life.
With time, Kathryn’s heart began to show damage. By the time she was in her mid-thirties, work, socializing and simple day to day activities became difficult. She longed for endurance so she could get through a normal day without struggling, and what better endurance training than running a marathon? After 18 months of training, dealing with her knee injury and making changes to her heart rates on the pacemaker, Kathryn ran in the 2004 New York Marathon. By the time she had passed the 40km mark, she had decided she wanted to run again in 2005, which she did. In 2006 she cut over half an hour off her personal best time and was still running strong as she approached the finish line.
In January 2007, Kathryn was fitted with her fifth pacemaker. Soon, she found training more difficult and with only 2 months to go her doctors told her she had structural abnormalities due to surgeries and running the marathon again would risk more heart damage. So while marathons may be off the agenda at the moment, Kathryn still enjoys running. She is still able to run half marathons instead… and hears there is one in Antarctica early next year!
